The Man

Stan Musial died yesterday at 92. Because he was a gentleman as well as a great ballplayer, Stan Musial was the favorite baseball player of Bobbie’s father, who was himself a gentleman. Musial was often said to be the most underrated of The Great Players. The reason for this is precisely because he was a gentleman. His contemporaries, during an age when baseball was still king, were more exciting (Willie Mays), faster and more powerful (Mickey Mantle), more tempestuous (Ted Williams), moodier and better copy (Joe DiMaggio). But none was greater than Stan the Man. He’s gone now, and we’ll miss him, but he’ll live on, perhaps still underrated as a great ballplayer, but not as a gentleman.
